I am seriously behind on my Goodreads Challenge. I blame working on my novel. But since I made the first post about Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge, I fulfilled a major dream and became a Book Riot Contributor! And yet, that gives me less time to read. Ha!
Anyway, here’s an update on my Read Harder progress.
- Read a book about sports. – Lord of Misrule by Jaime Gordon
- Read a debut novel. – Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
- Read a book about books. – The Emotional Craft of Fiction by Donald Maass (This totally counts imo!)
- Read a book set in Central or South America, written by a Central or South American author. – I have several on my TBR.
- Read a book by an immigrant or with a central immigration narrative.
- Read an all-ages comic.
- Read a book published between 1900 and 1950.
- Read a travel memoir.
- Read a book you’ve read before. – The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Read a book that is set within 100 miles of your location. – UGH this one is hard. Their Eyes Were Watching God would count. So would Paper Towns. But I’ve read those, and I don’t like rereading!
- Read a book that is set more than 5000 miles from your location. – Pachinko by Min Jin Lee
- Read a fantasy novel. – Uprooted by Naomi Novik
- Read a nonfiction book about technology.
- Read a book about war.
- Read a YA or middle grade novel by an author who identifies as LGBTQ+.
- Read a book that has been banned or frequently challenged in your country.
- Read a classic by an author of color.
- Read a superhero comic with a female lead.
- Read a book in which a character of color goes on a spiritual journey
- Read an LGBTQ+ romance novel – I need a rec for this, please!
- Read a book published by a micropress. – This weird thing.
- Read a collection of stories by a woman.
- Read a collection of poetry in translation on a theme other than love.
- Read a book wherein all point-of-view characters are people of color. – The Sellout by Paul Beatty
So I may need some recommendations… I have ideas for about half of them.

For 22 I highly recommend What is Not Yours is Not Yours by Helen Oyeyemi. I absolutely love the magical realism / fairytale / fable vibes in all of her stories.
I keep hearing about that one! I’ll give it a try. Thank you. 😊
For an LGBTQ+ romance novel, I would recommend Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan! It’s very LGBTQ+ friendly and super interesting!
I’ve been wanting to read that. I guess I didn’t realize it qualified as romance.
4. Dostoevsky’s Last Night – Cristina Peri Rossi
7. The Sun Also Rises – Hemingway
14. The War – Marguerite Duras
16. Howl and Other Poems – Allen Ginsberg
18. Wonder Woman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn
Another LQBTQ+ romance to check out is The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.
I like this “Read Harder” challenge. I’m working on a “book bucket list,” but so many on the list end of being classics by white men. A list like this adds some much-needed diversity to my reading list.
Thanks for the rec! That was one of the ones I really needed. 🙂
